Ready To Work On Projects?

After you take the state math test you can earn the right to work on projects. To earn the right to work on projects you must have successfully completed (your goal is mastery, not speed!) all of the following steps:

Math Pretest

If you can't do arithmetic you can't do math! You took a Pretest the beginning of the school year with a focus on on the 5th Grade math concepts (5th Grade Math Pretest - adapted from a Los Angeles Unified School District test) to identify topics you already know and topics you haven't learned yet. When you enter middle school you are expected to know arithmetic. Arithmetic includes addition, subtraction with regrouping, multiplication, division, place value, order of operations, how to compare numbers, know how to use both positive and negative numbers, fractions and rounding. You are expected to learn and pass (20 correct out of 22 problems) these math concept areas (ideally by December) before the school year ends. Do not take this test (in Google Classroom, the second test) until you are certain you can pass. If you pass (if I find out you can't do work from the math pretest you will have homework till the end of the year) it you have no more homework after we complete (we usually finish a week or two before Spring Break) the math curriculum.

Didn't Take Math Pretest Before Spring Break

If you don't pass the second pretest by the time we finish the curriculum you will will have homework every day and every weekend until you pass it. I will see how well you understand (do 10 problems and if you get at least 9 correct you are ready to move on. Show me your results) the following five steps in class:

Step 1. Subtraction with Regrouping

Step 2. Positive and Negative Numbers

  • Number Line. Do all levels and problems.. For Level 7 skip problems 7 and 8.

Step 3. Multiplication

If you have problems multiplying numbers here is a good multiplication process to help you learn them.

Step 4. Division.

Step 5. Fractions

Homework Every Day Until You Pass the Math Pretest

Pass all tests with a grade of at least an A- (9/10)

See me after school or during lunch to change your grade.

Math Master

Practice solving various problems in focused middle school math concepts at the level I am at to master the math concept. If I find that you do not understand a math concept or section I will ask you to do it again.
