Why English Language Arts

The intent of this page is to provide resources to help students with many of the areas they will need to master in Language Arts along with every other course. Click on each section such as Reading, Writing and so on, to get help in those specific areas. If you check below each section such as reading on this page you will find a few broad Common Core standards that are used repeatedly in all classes, from elective to math.

Reading

    • Nonfiction increases in importance.

Writing

    • Students will learn narrative essays first following the Rainbow format
    • All essays will be written using the 6 Traits writing process
    • Narratives essays will be taught first, followed by informational and argumentative essays.
    • Research gathered from multiple sources is a key strategy followed by all classes. Citations are required anytime you use someone's data.

Language Conventions

    • Grammar
    • Capitalization
    • Punctuation
    • Spelling
  • Vocabulary
      • Reference Materials (all are online)

Speaking and Listening

    • All students are expected to first listen. I repeat instructions as many times as needed until students no longer have questions. If I have to show the class how to work on an activity I will repeat instructions in as many different ways as needed. After I have restated instructions and all students are satisfied with answers then students are asked to do their work. If I am asked, "What am I supposed to do?" after I have completed answering students questions I will provide the answer after school or during lunch. Students may be engaged in a discussion which may involve reading material first. Students are asked to present their knowledge and ideas every day. Whatever topic they are working on must be presented in an organized and logical manner, use appropriate facts and details so that the main theme or idea is clear, use appropriate eye contact and pronunciation (including voice) .
