Reading Comprehension Strategies

    1. Monitor comprehension. Aware of what you know and what you do not understand.
    2. Thinking about thinking. During reading monitor understanding.
      1. Identify in the text where you have difficulty reading.
      2. Identify what the difficulty is.
      3. Restate a difficult section or passage in your own words.
      4. Reread the text to better understand a character and so on.
    3. Graphic organizers
      1. Online Venn diagram. Compare and contrast
      2. Cause and effect. Can also be used in other formats such as thinking about thinking.
      3. Story map. Chart the story structure such as characters, setting and so on.
    4. Answering questions.
      1. Right there.
      2. Think and search.
      3. Author and you.
      4. On your own. Reading the text may not help you find the answer.
    5. Generating questions
      1. Learn to ask yourself questions that relate to important information in the book.
    6. Story structure such as character, setting and so on.
    7. Summarizing. Paraphrase in your own words.

Struggling with Reading

If you are struggling with reading we will focus on Rimes. Rimes are the middle of words. We will use The Decoding Solution approach developed by Sharon Zinke that follows the following seven steps:

    1. Review short vowels.
    2. Spell one-syllable words with Magic Rimes
    3. Add common inflectional endings
    4. Spell two syllable words with Magic Rimes.
    5. Time for embedded Rimes
    6. Rest of the Rimes
    7. Reading and Writing
      1. See rimes in text while reading

Leveled Text

If you do not have a set of books that are adjusted for different reading levels there are different websites you can go to online that adjust the same text to different Lexile levels.

Reading Log. All students (3rd Grade and higher) should be reading at least 30 minutes a night! Includes a mathematical proof why reading more makes a difference.
