Learning addition and place value at the same time is essential to understand regrouping in both addition and subtraction. If you are having problems regrouping it is likely because you are having problems with place value. Most students learn to add the ones first, then the tens and so on. There have been studies that show this method is difficult for students to understand . There are two alternate methods to overcome this difficulty
Method 1. Use manipulatives (base 10 blocks) to show regrouping so students who count from left to right can see where numberes were borrowed.
Method 2. Add numbers from left to right.
For example, the number 22 is 20 + 2 or the number 222 is 200 + 20 + 2. Thee beauty of this second and more preferred method is the emphasis on place value.
