Math

Why take math? I never use more than half the stuff I learned! Before we really answer this question let's explore high school a little.

I looked at a few high school graduation requirements:

  1. I must pass at least two math classes in high school including an algebra course. If I fail a math class in high school I will have to retake the class to earn required high school units Better to learn the math now so I can easily pass high school classes.
  2. I must pass a California High School Exit Examination which includes the math I am learning now.

So now that I know I will need math just to graduate high school what is math?

Now that I know reasoning is the act of thinking about something in a logical, sensible way there are two types of reasoning I will learn:

So the reason I am taking math is to :

Now let's look at how math is used today and in the movies:

Number System

Watch the Sesame Street 1-2-3 Count With Me 1997 video (start at 12:10 minute mark) and read the numbers explanation by Steven Strogatz

Imagine this was the year 1492 and you were a passenger on a ship. Do you think the sailor needed to know any math like geometry to get you safely to your destination?

Many people think in shapes and sizes. And even if you are not a visual learner to get around in the world you need knowledge of areas related to space and position, size and the shape of things in it (called spatial use).

How much more is a college education worth compared to a high school diploma? Plenty!

Math pedagogy focuses on the five dimensions of mathematically powerful classrooms under the Teaching for Robust Understanding in Mathematics (TRU Math) analytic scheme . The general part of TRU Math delineates a measurement scheme that focuses on five minimally overlapping dimensions of mathematics classroom activity.
