Shalom Beit Chaverim members!
This week's Torah portion is Bo. The plot thickens in Egypt.
Three more plagues occur; the last and most dramatic is the slaying
of the Egyptian first born, which leads to the Exodus. The Israelites
dab the blood of the pascal lamb on their doorposts to avert death in
their midst. Come midnight, God strikes the Egyptians; they are quick
to let the Israelites go. After four hundred and thirty years in Egypt,
the Israelites depart that very night! (Sim Shalom Siddur)
Did you ever wonder what it might have been like to be part of the three
million Israelites said to have left Egypt on that night? I found that scene
in the movie, "Prince of Egypt" to be a very a 'moving' depiction. I remember
resisting going to see this movie because it was animated. But, the writers
did work with rabbis to stay close to the version in our Bible.
A few things to put on your calendars:
Safe Nights Dinner - 2/22/17
Beit Chaverim is again preparing to host a dinner for Safe Nights and also a lunch for the day next day:

I, for one, am enjoying our Friday Night Salon Services. If you haven't yet
attended one, plan on coming February 24th. The Salens, in Saint Leonard
will be hosting. Dinner at 6:00 PM and Services at 7:00. If you would like to
bring an entree, side dish, or desert, please email:

Next week I will be sending out information about the upcoming Jewish
celebration of Tu' Bishvat. The 'Tu' part stands for the number 15. Shevat
is the Hebrew month we are currently in. It might be hard to think of this time
of year as one of rebirth of the trees and forests. In Israel, driving through the
hills of Jerusalem, it is overwhelmingly beautiful to see the pink blossoms on
the almond trees. Always a beautiful sign of the upcoming spring and hope.
Shabbat Shalom,
Reb Betsy
