Shalom Chaverim,
If you haven't already RSVP'd for the Kuperman Farewell, check your email for our 'evite' to our May 18th Friday Night Service and Farewell to the Kuperman family!! It is going to be a festive evening! (with a few tears being shed). If you didnt get an evite, send an email to BeitChaverim.MD@gmail.com
We will also be celebrating the Holiday of Shavuot, the giving of the Torah! Some holiday traditions are; decorating the 'sanctuary' with lots of plants, flowers, and agricultural items; (I was once on a Kibbutz for the holiday and the people decorated all the tractors!!) and eating blintzes! Shavuot is when we read the Book of Ruth. It is chanted to a beautiful melody.
B'har-B'chukotai, Leviticus 25:1-26:2/26:3-27:34 another double portion:
God instructs Moses to tell the Israelites that in every seventh year, the land shall observe a Sabbath of complete rest: Fields should not be sown and vines should not be pruned.
After forty-nine years, a jubilee year is to be celebrated when all the land that had been sold during that time should be returned to its original owners and slaves are to be freed. God instructs Moses to tell the Israelites not to make idols, to keep the Sabbath, and to venerate the sanctuary of the Eternal. God promise blessings to the Children of Israel if they follow the law and warns about the curse that will befall the people if they do not observe God's commandments. Gifts made to the Sanctuary whether by conditional vows or by unconditional acts of pious gratitude are discussed. (URJ.org)
