(So this page is for the information of the Administrators of the site)
(Much of what follows is now irrelevant after the conversion to "New" Google Sites). Grrr.
Formatting problems
when things get dire with formatting, use the Tx symbol which resets selected text to default. To get rid of unwanted centering, make sure the blank line above is selected and set to L alignment, then select the offending text and L align it. Try to avoid the para indent tool.Inserting photos
It is worthwhile to ensure that there is at least one blank line below the position you choose to insert, to add content either below or above.Remember to set the class photo to 100% (not S, M or L or Original size) to cater for the many operating systems, screens and devices.Titling photos
One of the problems of photos on web pages is the difficulties to have explanatory text under or near them. This can be overcome by diving in to <html> (on the Edit menu).Find the image in the HTML (<img src="...">) and around it should be a <div style="..."></div> tag: type <br> then add the caption after the <img src="..."> and before the closing </div>Use the Update button to close the HTML view and you can then select the text and format it e.g. centre, bold etc. You can also edit the text directly under the image.See the example in place on our help page updating and inserting photos. The relevant source code looks like this:Hyperlinking
Refreshing the page
When you think eh? I changed that before, you are most probably looking at a cached version of the page. Press F5.
Managing photos and storage quota
Sometimes a photo might be uploaded that exceeds 200Kb. The only problem with this is that the site does have a data storage limit (see Cog / Manage site / Site Storage). The only remedy is to delete the image from the page AND the site, resize the image offline to 1024x800 pixels or less, and reload it to the desired page.Deleting a photo from the site
Cog / Manage Site / Attachments / check the box on the LHS of the identified file / DeleteIf you delete a page, any photo attached to it, or lurking behind it, will be deleted as well.If you delete an "attachment" photo at the bottom of the page, then that photo is deleted from the site as well."Lurking" images behind a page
You might have deleted an image from a page. But the image still lurks, waiting to be used again (Edit / Insert Picture to see what is waiting to be used). If you have no further use of the image it should be deleted from the site (see above).Backup
Periodically it is prudent to backup. Select from the Cog "Manage Site" then "Copy this SIte" allocating an appropriate backup name. e.g. ABHSpioneers2018MarchPrivacy and changing the access to another URL
Have a look at "Share" and you will see that the new access permissions are "Anyone who has the link can view". This means that Google doesn't index it, and no one (except administrators) can edit. People need to make a request to us for any changes.
This access method has some risk in that the URL can fall into the wrong hands, either inadvertently or deliberately, with a consequence of privacy being compromised. If necessary, a new URL can be created using the steps outlined in "Backup" (above). All known members will then need to be advised of the new URL.
