Michael Ramsden
As remembered by Colin Henson
My memory of Michael goes back to 3rd class at St Ives Public School. We used to sit together. His talent as an artist was clear then. I have no recollection of him being interested in sport. The third member of our "Group" was Tim Gibb a former Asquith Boy who died a few years ago. The three of us would often talk about what we would be like "50 years from now" as if it was another world away....................it is amazing that the 50 years we were referring to has now well and truly passed!!!Michael, Tim and I started at Asquith (as we all did) at Hornsby High in 1960. We were inseparable in the 1st year. Michael was always well dressed, he encouraged me to wear my tie with the thin side prominent and I tried to maintain a dress standard in line with him. We went up the road to Asquith and from that point on we started to grow apart. My fascination with Asquith Girls (particularly Pam Slater) commenced mid-way through 2nd year...........Michael started to be a bit rebellious and obviously art dominated his life.
Michael’s interest in art increased at an amazing pace. I think he got to know "arty people" in the Kings Cross area. At that time it was clear to me that he was no longer interested in school. His "blow up" with Miss Smith (I am 75% sure it was Miss Smith) in which some pretty severe sexual references were apparently used, occurred early in 3rd year and he left the School. I tried hard to keep in touch with him but by that stage he had mentally moved on to his world of art. I didn't see him again.
I hope that helps. By the way, some of Michael’s paintings have been highly acclaimed (see links below).
