From the past:
"A lot of my work [transport economics] was for Whitlam's lot and I enjoyed lots of first class air travel and booze..."
2004
I was a late arrival at ABHS, having moved from Kenya via UK with my parents and brother John (who left in the year before the Leaving). We were told we spoke posh but I guess that has long gone.
After the Leaving I went to UNSW and studied Economics (I think a few of you came along for the ride - certainly Alex Wardrop did) and I managed a First class honours in economics (strange when you think I did not do well in economics at the Leaving). Big break came when I started a PhD on transport economics and moved heavy duty into econometrics and microeconomics which I finished in 1972 and then headed off in my little British racing green Wolseley to Melbourne (that car cost me $400). I lived at Queen’s Colege Melbourne Uni for 2 years - free board if I tutored 1 hour a week - bloody good deal.
Worked in Melbourne as a freelance consultant in transport economics (and big first work was on the National Highway System and then the Third Sydney Airport that we are still waiting for). A lot of my work was for Whitlam’s lot and I enjoyed lots of first class air travel and booze.
Met my beautiful (still is) wife Johanna who had arrived from Holland for a holiday and because of me never went back to live. There is something about these European women. We were married in early 1975 when we went of to Uni of Oxford where I took up an appointment as a post doc research fellow and a Fellow at St Cross College (great time was had by all - especially the port and snuff nights). After a couple of years in this idyllic setting we were made an offer at Macquarie Uni and back we came. That was 12 years at that place (not bad in beginning but never again). I got a Chair in Management there in 1989 and left soon after to join Uni of Sydney where I am today. Great place in Business School running my own Institute of 30 folks. I set up my own Institute in 1990 which has grown and been recognised as a national centre of excellence with over 30 staff. Life is good at Sydney, supplemented by my business interests. The Hensher group Pty is into econometric software with offices in Sydney and New York (the big seeler is Limdep/Nlogit for those into stats).
We have two children (adults now): Andrew 35 and Danielle 33. Andrew works for William Hill and is second in charge next to Tom Waterhouse while Danielle is the Executive officer at a large US business services financial entity in Sydney.Over the years have lived in Southern California (UC Irvine Orange County), UK (University of Oxford), and Holland.
I am a Professor of Management, and Director of the Institute of Transport Studies: The Australian Key Centre of Teaching and Research in Transport Management in The Faculty of Economics at The University of Sydney. David is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, Past President of the International Association of Travel Behaviour Research and a Past Vice-Chair of the International Scientific Committee of the World Conference of Transport Research. David is on the editorial boards of 10 of the leading transport journals and Area Editor of Transport Reviews. David is series and volume editor of the handbook series “Handbooks in Transport” published by one of the world’s most prestigious academic publishing houses - Elsevier/Pergamon press. He has published extensively (over 300 papers) in the leading international transport journals and key journals in economics as well as five books. His most recent books are on the Demand for Automobiles, published by North-Holland the Bus and Coach Business (Allen and Unwin), Transport: An Economics and Management Perspective (Oxford Univeristy Press), and Stated Choice Methods (with Jordan Louviere and Joffre Swait – Cambridge University Press). He has recently completed a book on Applied Choice Analysis – A Primer (with John Rose) forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. His particular interests are transport economics, transport strategy, sustainable transport, productivity measurement, traveller behaviour analysis, stated choice experiments, dynamic discrete-continuous choice modelling, privatisation and deregulation. David has recently embarked on a major research endeavour with Prof Stewart Jones that uses advanced discrete choice methods to study the performance of firms with a specific focus on the distress of firms. David has advised numerous government and private sector organisations on matters related to transportation especially matters related to forecasting demand for existing and new transportation services, for example the Speedrail project, the Liverpool-Parramatta Transitway, the North-West Sydney Transport Study, the M2, M4, M5 and cross-city tunnel tollroads. David is regarded as Australia’s most eminent expert on matters relating to travel demand. Appointments have included: a member of the executive committee that reviewed bus transport bids for the Olympic Games, the NSW Government’s Peer Review Committee for the Strategic Transport Plan, Peer reviewer for Transfund (N Z) of the New Zealand project evaluation program, and a member of the executive committee of ATEC, a consortium promoting a freight rail system between Melbourne and Darwin.
