Newcastle hospital, of lung cancer, 4 June 2020. (born 11 Apr 1948)
Hi all,
I have the sad job of announcing the loss of another of our cohort – Bernie Newlands.
Alan Bruce and I managed to catch up with him the week before he passed away, not aware that he would leave us so soon thereafter.
Bernie has lived an interesting, quite itinerant life, the later years with his wife Johanna, travelling extensively around Australia.
Once met, never forgotten!
In the end, it was lung cancer that got the better of him and he passed peacefully.

I had the privilege of knowing Bernie quite well, as he was my neighbour in West Pymble.
He was the youngest of a working class family (Russ, Myrtle, Christine, Kerry and Bernie) who relocated from Revesby in 1960. Russ had an egg round, later a brewery delivery business, in which Bernie helped. Later family business ventures included a newsagency, a milk bar, and then a bottle shop at Berowa. Bernie teamed up with Graham Jones for a while in a plastic extrusions business at Mona Vale.
John Jephcott rolled his car on the Comenarra Parkway, resulting in some serious injury to both himself and Bernie who ended up with a noticeable scar on his face. He was quite self-conscious about this, and grew a beard.
Bernie loved to party, a heavy smoker and drinker, and seemed always cheerful. He married Sue and lived in Turramurra with his two daughters, Nicole and Tamara. This marriage lasted for about 20 years, and then Bernie remarried, to Johanna.
He and Johanna travelled extensively as grey nomads and he was a advocate for AA, providing valuable counselling and assistance, stemming from his own struggles.
He had a heart of gold, and always stepped up to the plate when anyone needed help.
R.I.P Bernie, mate.
