"Sharing One Skin" Okanagan Community
The summary of the reading from, ``Sharing One Skin” by Jeanette Armstrong is how she talks about her lifestyle of being a native first, talking about where she came from and explaining her culture. She also talks about the four capacities of self, which are physical self, emotional self, intellectual, and spirit self. The meanings of the four capacities are, for physical self it means, is one part of the whole self that depends entirely on the parts of us that exist beyond the skin. For emotional self, it is connected to other parts of our larger selves around us. Intellectual self is, other capacities we engage in when we take action are directed by the spark of memory once it is ignited. The last one which is the spirit self is, it is part both of the individual being and of the larger self of which all things are part.

Summary of the reading from, ¨Native American Identity¨ by Perry G. Horse is about a lifestyle of living in two different worlds which are the Native American way, and the White Men way. Another thing I caught from this article was from what the grandmother had to say to him that one day all of us will forget our native ways and become white people. An explanation of becoming white people is saying we are like them. We are like them in ways such as, we can speak and write like them, we are educated in the school system, we have formed their kind of government, and etc.

Why Indigenous Language Matters and What We Can Do to Save Them
Lindsay Morcome talks about the importance of her native cultural language. She brings up good points of why the language is important to her. Some good key points that she brought that I caught were, letting her connect with family, community and also ancestors. Also, she talks about how she can then pass it to others. Another thing that she brought up which in my opinion that was interesting to me was how the language functions and how humans store it into their brains and then communicate it with others. Not only does she bring up points about how it’s important to her, she also talks about how our indigenous language is in danger. The revolt of 1680 was one of the only successful uprisings by Native Americans yet its result withheld the Spanish for 12 years. The Revolt not only protected but saved the Pueblos culture, traditions and language but also held their land and resources. The Revolt was led by Po’pay of Ohkay Owingeh whose drive to carry out this act was written by the Spanish threatening to execute several holy men and whip many others. Research Log 2
The Seminole War of 1858 followed the refusal of most Seminoles to abandon the reservation that had been specifically established for them north of Lake Okeechobee and to relocate west of the Mississippi River. Whites coveted this land and sought to oust the Seminoles under the Indian Removal Act. Led by their dynamic chief Osceola, the Seminole warriors hid their families in the Everglades and fought vigorously to defend their homeland, using guerrilla tactics. As many as 2,000 U.S. soldiers were killed in this prolonged fighting.

The article, “Language Loss and Revitalization of Gondi Language: An Endangered Language of Central India,” talks about the causes of the language. Although, there are many causes in the language, there is this major cause of language loss of the, “Gonds is due to constant influence of dominant languages like Hindi and Chhattisgarhi.” There was an article or study that revealed that the current language of gonds is neither pure Hindi nor pure Chhattisgarhi. Therefore, with contact with these two languages, a new language has emerged which is called, “Dehati language” which means local language by the tribe. Research Log 3
The article, “Endangered Language Loss Calls For Preservation, Revitalization” is about researchers at the University of Arizona who are being involved in activities that tie to endangered and lost languages. As for others, they are helping to preserve languages classified as “moribund,” meaning that no children are learning their native languages as their first languages in their own homes. They also talk about raising awareness of this matter. A visiting assistant professor in the UA Departement of Linguistics, Elizabeth Kickam explains “language allows people to create an identity for themselves and as community members, language is so intimately tied to culture it not only reflects cultural norms and cultural practices, it encodes them and is also influenced by them.”
The video, “The Loss of Native American Languages” is about this man Manny Iron Hawk who is many of the 1000 lakota people who encourages other people to talk their language, he like other people have the same beliefs that the language ties to who you are, ties to the ceremonies, and where you are from. The Lakota language has been under attack, one main cause was because of the COVID 19 virus, which took many elders away. Therefore, this puts a lot of work to be done. A teacher Iris Eagle Chasing teaches the language online. She talks about how generations before her experienced bigotry. They had consequences because they were speaking their language, so with that, many were chosen not to learn it and many were never given the chance. It also talks about how in recent years the Lakotas speakers have compiled many textbooks to teach the language.

The article, “The Evolving Beauty of the Shawl Dance” talks about general information behind this dance. You would think that this dance came from a long time ago, it’s actually a fairly recent innovation, young women who come from many nations skim, twirl, and hop. If you didn’t know back in the 1920’s men also created their fancy dance and the regalia that they had was much similar to the women. The 1950’s was the early form of when this dance took off, women in the northern tribes incorporated traditionally feminie aspects, which created the fancy shawl dance. They say that the fancy shawl dancers often resemble butterflies. On the footwork part, one has to be light on its feet, the individual itself determines the way they wanna dance, and at least one foot has to hit the ground with each drumbeat, except during jumps or spins.
The article, “The story of how the chicken dance came to the Blackfoot people” is about how the chicken dance became the chicken dance. It was originated by the Blackfoot people, and those people are very much proud of the dance. There was an actual story about it. “Long ago a young Blackfoot male went hunting to get food for his family, he heard a noise in the distance. When he approached closer to the sound he saw these prairie chickens dancing in the tall grass. He took his bow and arrow, shot and killed one of them. That very night when his family and him rested, he got this dream that this prairie chicken spirit came to him and asked him "Why did you kill me? My people were doing a sacred dance of my people". The man replied that he needed to feed his family. The chicken had honored his decision and told this man that he was going to teach him this sacred dance of his people. The young man’s task was to go out there and teach every man this dance, if he did not do it then the chicken was going to come back and take his life.” That’s how the chicken dance came to the Blackfoot people. The video “Navajo Basket Dance” shows us information about what the baskets mean. . The basket itself is a representation of our life, the center part of it represents us, the red part is dyed with berries and it is a representation of our lifeline, the black parts of the basket are also dyed with ash and it’s supposed to represent the trials of our life, the central part is connected to the outer side so the outer part is supposed to represent the heavens and they wanna make sure their connections to the heavens or Heavenly Father is very apparent, making sure the basket is facing up so that their prayers can always go up towards our heavens. When dancing this basket dance they wanna make sure they have good posture and that they represent themselves in the most respectful way that they can. When dancing, staying on your toes and staying light are key, and they don’t want heavy footsteps, making sure no heels just toes. The women wear this traditional dress that is like a rug dress, the colors are red and black. Black represents the sky which is on the body, the red which is the skirt represents earth. On the skirt there are four triangles, those triangles are the four sacred mountains, also she is wearing turquoise which is a protective stone to the Navajo people only found in those mountains.
