Can you explain to me, why it is so difficult to get an EHPC, also I feel it is a nightmare to listened to as a grandparent (main carer) I worry for his future my boy is ASD, constantly told his education is not affected by his autism, I disagree and don’t hold much hope for support for him going into further education in a years’ time.
I’m sorry that you feel getting an EHCP is difficult, that is not the process that we would expect. Getting an EHCP for children and young people that need them should never be difficult, it’s a legal process that we abide by. If he needs an EHCP to meet his needs then explore that with the school. Information on the statutory process can be found on the Blackpool SEND Local Offer. Under the parents and carers area there is a section on Statutory Assessment and EHC Plans.
If it is a concern about the school, please contact SENDIASS who will be able to offer advice and guidance. SENDIASS will also be able to answer your questions around the process of an EHCP. The Blackpool SEND Local Offer will walk you through it but sometimes it’s nice to have that face to face contact who can answer your questions when they come up.
The Blackpool Parent Carer Forum is also a place where you can receive advice and support as a grandparent. SENDIASS will work with anyone who has parental responsibility for a child or young person with SEND, parent or grandparent, you will receive the same service. If you feel you are not heard by the school as a grandparent with parental responsibility, please let SENDIASS know and we can look at some training for SENCOs. If you feel you are not being listened to by the SEND Service, again, please let SENDIASS know and then we will absolutely take that as an action to do some work about working with grandparents and how they feel.
