FAQS

How much time will I have to commit?

On your first meet up after you’re matched, both of you will complete a friendship contract together. This is where you will both discuss how often you can meet and what kind of activities you would like to do.  Some of our friend see each other more frequently but on average they tend to get together approximately once a month.

Does life really mean life?

Ideally yes!  Lifetime friends until one of you dies. However, we know that things in life can change.  One of you might move away from Blackpool we would hope you would still stay in touch, like friends do, by phone, email or text.

Can I choose or at least tell you my preferences?

Absolutely! Before you are matched, as a project we will get to know both of you and find out your likes and dislikes. For instance, some of our young people and volunteers have stated that they are more are more comfortable with a female or male friend.  Ultimately though the young person will be the one that decides who they will be matched with, they will choose their Friend for Life by watching a VLOG.

If I volunteer what help and support will I get?

There is lots of support that you will get. We will be on hand to offer advice, training, support and supervision.

There will also be activity days where you can meet with the other friendships, get to know them, share your own experiences.  and have fun.

What if I want to do this but finances will be a barrier?

Don’t worry! There are lots of different activities and places you can go that are free or charge or are cheap to go to. We are currently working on a database of free or discounted activities. If you are struggling to find a place you could always speak to the Friend for Life Co-ordinator.   We also have a small pot of money which may be available should your friendship need some financial assistance.

Does my age matter?

Friend for Life is aimed at “our children” who are 10, 11 and 12 of age at the initial match.

Adult volunteers must be over 18.  there is no maximum age for volunteering with us.

What sort of things will I be expected to do with my friend?

There are many adventures you can go on and places you can go with your friends. Some of our matches have been to the cinema or the pleasure beach. On the other hand some of our matches might prefer a walk along the beach or to go to the park. Every friendship is different.

Can I introduce them to my family and friends?

Of course, over time you will be able to introduce them to your friends and family just like you would any other friendship. However it is important to get to know each other well before doing that.
