Our 5th graders vejigante masks from 5-309 got accepted to the district 10 festival! Along the day, I met previous graduated students performing or making their art into these shows! So proud to be their art teacher.
Kindergartenrs explored the yearly routine of hedgehogs by learning about hibernation . We discussed how hedgehogs curl into a ball to stay safe and warm, and how their heart rate and breathing slow down during the winter.
Students observed the contrast between the sharp texture of quills and how it protects from predators and the soft belly of a hedgehog. Using cardboard stamping and tempera paint , students explored printmaking techniques to create expressive quills. Texture plates were used for color block rubbings to build a nesting environment made of leaves and natural textures.
By revisiting the oval shape, students formed the hedgehog’s curled hibernating body. Each artwork reflects an understanding of texture, printmaking, shape, and seasonal animal behavior.
5th graders and 2nd graders started off on this school of fishes mural. This focuses on the currents of fishes as well as layers of colors from oil pastels layering and blending. More fishes to come!
Art entry for New York State's Online Art Gallery honoring
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. beginning January 2026
Inspired by the powerful words of Dr. Martin Luter King Jr., 5th grade Art Club Students created mixed media dream sculpture that reflect the hopes and wishes he dreamed for. Student painted waves with watercolor and cotton ball clouds of various color to depict integration and spreading his word in a dreamscape mood.
They constructed a rainbow tunnel each with a personal handwritten quote for people to walk through and embody his message.
The following are the quotes:
Purple:
"The time is always right to do what is right"
Indigo:
"No person has the right to rain on your dreams."
Blue:
"Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education."
Green
"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend".
Yellow :
"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase".
Orange:
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
Red:
"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
Kandinsky's Concentric Circles
Second graders Students explored color, shape, and texture by creating winter night scenes inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s concentric circles. The dazzling lights were made from paper cut-out circles in small, medium, and large sizes, layered to create visual rhythm and movement.
Using chisel-tip markers, students drew bold winter trees with expressive branches. They stamped additional circles with paint to add texture and depth. Chalk pastels were used to design unique snowflakes, and students mixed cool-tone tints with paintbrushes (emphasis on acrylic white paint qualities) to create the snowy ground and winter atmosphere. Each artwork highlights experimentation with layering, color mixing, and fine-motor skills, resulting in vibrant, one-of-a-kind winter landscapes.
