K/1 SC celebrated International Happiness Day by creating pretzels with bright fluorescent paint and beads.
In the words of my co-worker Ms.B who I adore collaborating with stated the following" [we] organized the creation of a collaborative work of art produced by our 2nd , 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Art Clubs along with some members from Ms. Estrella's class in support of the NYC Department of Environment Protection's Water Resources Art and Poetry, Clean Water Contest. Our artwork depicts a variety of sea life swimming harmoniously. It includes wildlife that had left the area, but are now returning e.g., whales, seals and dolphins due to the Department's efforts to improve the water quality in our area. The artwork will be judged and student "Water Champions" named who we hope to be among.
In awareness of Black History and Women's History Month (March), the life story of folk artist Clementine Hunter inspired Third Graders. We discussed the historical context and treatment she went through for her passion for painting in her fifties. Here are some completed paintings that are just in time for spring!
She paints based on her memories; a series she continues is her paintings of zinnias.
To raise awareness of people's dedication to their careers, 1st and SC 3rd grade designed a prototype of a career robot. Students reflected and revised their robots on what they needed to function effectively in their careers. They were asked the following: What is their job/career?
Think, what do we need help with? What tools would they need to do their task? To embody the build of a robot, students are provided with metallic paper to mimic the reflective qualities.
