Please attend if you have not done so! I am proud of the creativity our students put out in the art, performance and festival in general. Thank you in advance.
Tyree Guyton
Fourth graders discussed the political climate of
Michigan, Detroit in 1967. Tyree Guyton used art as a
collaborative art exhibition to push forward social action
for the abandoned homes in his local neighborhood, the
Heidelberg Project. Students formed a house using
discarded and found objects.
The Key to Road Safety
To spread awareness of Garrett Morgan's invention of the three-way traffic light, which saved countless lives, the Kindergarten / First self-contained class created a sculptural traffic light and practiced road safety with imaginary play.
Mae Reeves
Who is Mae Reeves, you ask?
Well, born in Philadelphia, Mae Reeves was a trailblazer for black
women, and she had a lasting impact on the fashion scene. She ran her business for several
decades in the mid-20th century and is well known
for her handcrafted hats. She believed her hats were a
statement of pride and identity. 5th graders cooperated in pairs to sculpt a wearable hat and performed a hat parade for the entire school!
Dana Powell-Smith
“ Georgette Granddaughter”
1st Grade students created loved one portraits and thought of fond memories of what activities they do together.
Students generated painted papers with scrappers, combs, and brushes. They brainstormed who and what to depict in Dana Powell-Smith's style utilizing circles and triangles.
