3rd graders ponder on the question on what moments can shape the future. They wrote down their future predictions and plan their orb design.
To further elaborate on their imaginative idea, we revisited the visual elements of shapes and lines. We also learned how to interpret the color wheel. They mixed their own color schemes. If done early, they then experiment on hand placement to complete their composition.
In celebration, of Mental Health Awareness month and Asian-American Heritage Month, class 4-221 studied Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama.
I conducted an experiment on perception based on looks alone versus learning about the artist life story. How does the first impression shift when the students learn more about the artist?
This was to internalize the idea that we should listen to each other thoughts first rather than assuming what a person is experiencing.
Here is an example of a student's thoughts.
Students used origami paper (in respect to Japanese culture) and with the key features of Kusama's eyes artwork, they designed their own "eye-dentity" based on who they are and what is important to them (i.e.: interests, family, beliefs and values).
5th grade mapped out their identity to ponder on what makes them who they are. From there, we studied New Yorker Artist Joanna Goodman to learn how to collage our portrait with visual imagery of our identity. Students experiment with outfit and background layout from various magazines scraps.
