Middle School (6th-8th): (2026-2027) SEB Instructional Schedule
High School: School Connect Implementation Sample
To assist schools in building uniformity of language and practice regarding self-regulation, SWSS is recommending schools use The Zones of Regulation. This is an evidence based framework and set of instructional resources which teach students how to identify their current state and to learn how to adjust it to the situation. Because Zones are used by so such a large community of educators and counselors, there is a rich community of conversation and free resources in familiar places.
SWSS MOU - Introduction to Zones of Regulation
Check out the QRG: Self-Regulation Module to find lesson plans and a variety of grade appropriate instructional resources.
What Is Self-Regulation?
Regulation is the ability to notice and manage our energy level, attention and feelings so we can respond effectively to what’s happening around us.
It’s not about being “calm” all the time—it’s about having the tools to adjust, like a thermostat, so we can learn, connect, and problem-solve.
Why Are Regulation Skills Important?
Self-regulation lays the foundation for our wellbeing. By teaching children self-regulation skills, we develop their ability to effectively navigate the complexity of emotions, especially in difficult situations. When we equip children with regulation skills, we create a ripple effect of harmony in our community.
SBCUSD has adopted Second Step as the K-8th grade curriculum to help students develop social, emotional and behavioral (SEB) skills. Administrators, teachers, and counselors can log into the Second Step platform through SBLink.
