The Zones of Regulation (TK-12)

An evidence-based framework and curriculum to teach students how to build awareness of their internal state and use a variety of tools to support self-regulation.  Kuypers, 2011

To assist schools in building uniformity of language and practice regarding self-regulation, SWSS is recommending schools use The Zones of Regulation.  This is an evidence based framework and set of instructional resources which teach students how to identify their current state and to learn how to adjust it to the situation.   Because Zones are used by so such a large community of educators and counselors, there is a rich community of conversation and free resources in familiar places.

Self-Regulation Module

Check out the QRG: Self-Regulation Module to find lesson plans and a variety of grade appropriate instructional resources.

What Is Self-Regulation?

Self-regulation is our conscious effort to notice our internal states (e.g., body sensations, thoughts, feelings), assess the situation we are in, and adapt to that situation. It involves the ability to modulate our reactions and be intentional with our actions.

Why Are Regulation Skills Important?

Self-regulation lays the foundation for our wellbeing. By teaching children self-regulation skills, we develop their ability to effectively navigate the complexity of emotions, especially in difficult situations. When we equip children with regulation skills, we create a ripple effect of harmony in our community.

Five Week Self-Regulation Module

The five week self-regulation module introduces students to the basic concepts and tools of self-regulation.  Students learn to notice their internal state, decide if it’s appropriate for the situation, and choose a regulation strategy Each lesson plan supports five days of instruction with resources to use all week long.

Second Step (K-8)

The K-5 Second Step program includes four units - each with five age-appropriate lessons. Lessons require approximately 15 to 30-minutes once per week and include scripting and support for teachers to guide student conversations.  Additional resources including videos, songs, and downloadable handouts promote student engagement throughout the week.   The last lesson in each unit is a performance task where students demonstrate evidence of their learning.

The 6-8 Second Step program includes four units each with age-appropriate lesson on a specific theme. Lessons require approximately 25 minutes once per week with resources to embed and extend learning throughout the week.  The program also includes nearly 200 advisory activities and book lists.

Scope & Sequence

Many teachers have recognized the need to help students access their thinking brain.  As such, they have been incorporating practices such as breathing, mindfulness and "Brain Breaks" into their teaching.   Teachers use different strategies to increase or decrease the energy levels of their students.

These strategies are useful tools in helping students prepare for learning.  Now we are ready, as a system, to teach students how to self-regulate their emotions and energy levels.
