TFI 2.8 INTERVENTIONS: Access to Tier 1 Supports

Tier 2 supports are explicitly linked to Tier 1 supports, and students receiving Tier 2 supports have access to and are included in, Tier 1 supports.

Systems support the accurate and durable implementation of practices by staff, the efficient use of data for decision-making, and achievement of outcomes. Staff are trained to prevent many student behavior problems as well as to deal with disruptive behaviors in a proactive and positive manner. Systems provide the procedures and infrastructure to support and maintain new evidence-based practices.

TFI 2.8 Big Ideas

In element, TFI 2.8, the must implement interventions that a directly linked to Tier 1. Meaning the same concepts being taught in Tier 1 will be re-taught with a specific focus and additional practice in Tier 2.

Additionally all students receiving Tier 2 interventions must also have access to all school-wide supports.

Action planning includes: Reviewing all Tier 2 interventions identified in TFI 2.5 to ensure they a directly aligned to Tier 1, Conducting a survey/observations to make sure students in Tier 2 interventions have full access to Tier 1 supports.

Navigating the Tiers

Once the Tier 2 Team determines a student may benefit from Tier 2 Interventions, that student will then get both Tier 1 and Tier 2. It is important to recognize at that point the student will get more, not less. This means they get full access to Tier 1 and additionally receive support in Tier 2. This is why it is important to ensure all interventions are aligned to Tier 1.

The Differences Between Tier 1 and Tier 2

Because Tier 1 instruction provides the foundation for Tier 2 instruction and intervention, it can sometimes be tricky to identify when a student has moved from instruction to intervention. The following chart is a quick check reference for determining if a site is providing Tier 2 instruction and intervention.

What does Access to Tier 1 Look Like

Once a student begins to receive Tier 2 interventions, they should continue to receive Tier 1 Supports. This consists of:

Behavior Instruction - School-wide Expectations, 16 Classroom Survival Skills, Zones of Regulation, Second Step/School Connect

Proactive/Instructive/Restorative Classroom Practices

School-wide Reinforcement System

Active Supervision - Movement, Scanning, Interacting with all students

How to Score 2 Points on TFI 2.8

To receive a 2 Point Score Teams must be able to say yes to the following set of questions.

For each intervention selected in TFI 2.5:

2 Point:

Tier 2 supports are explicitly linked to Tier 1 supports, and student receiving Tier 2 interventions have full access to all Tier 1 supports.

1 Point:

Tier 2 supports are not explicitly linked to Tier 1 supports and/or students receiving Tier 2 interventions have some, but not full access to Tier 1 supports.

0 Point:

No evidence that students receiving Tier 2 interventions have access to Tier 1 supports.
