My overall experience in Foundations of Art was good. I grew as both an artist and learner through the many different projects we were assigned. While I was working in the first month, I was unsure if I would be able to finish the class. We had projects assigned that we only got two or three class periods on, meaning A LOT of work outside of class, and had to write artist statements. A little while in, I considered dropping the class, but ultimately decided against it. So I pushed myself and tried my best to keep up with my work. I often struggled, but I kept going and eventually did make it through the class.
I struggled with charcoal especially. It is a very difficult medium to work with as it smudges easily and once you make a mistake, there's no going back from it. I make a lot of mistakes in my art, meaning pretty much every piece I did with charcoal ended up messy. Luckily, I finished my Mixed Media piece fairly well, and you can tell that the subject is a cat.
I loved working with prints, both gelatin and linoleum, though linoleum especially. Though I found linoleum prints pretty difficult, they were probably my favorite to work with because you can create exact copies of the same photo or pattern hundreds of times in so many colors and on so many backgrounds. The options were pretty much limitless, so I enjoyed that freedom.
I'm very proud of my Surrealist Painting because I've never painted skin before and I always have problems with proportions, but in this piece it seems to me that almost impossible to tell. The skin looks pretty accurate, especially when compared to my reference photo, and the size of the eyes, nose, and eyebrows not only match my reference photo almost perfectly, but also you can tell that this is a human face and not something else.
Art is so important in my life. I love looking at it and creating it. There's just so many ways to create art, and when you think about it, almost everything is art. Art is all around us, in nature, in cities, even in our homes. All it takes is a little bit of searching. All of the mediums that exist, as well as all the mediums that haven't been used yet, fascinate me. Art relates to my life because it is in everything I do.
