Circle Project

Space, 7x10 in

I have a thing for space. I love the vast emptiness and the fact that anything could be out there. So I decided to do a space piece to really kick off the year. Because this is a circle project, I chose one of my favorite circles (or spheres, I guess), which is the moon. I like the shadows and highlights on the moon and decided it would be a good topic to use.

I used white acrylic gouache, black ink, a white gelly roll pen, and a black sheet of paper. The white gouache was mixed with water and used as a base color, which I then went over with a mixture of the ink, gouache, and a bit of water. After a few layers of these, varying between the plain gouache and the mix of ink and gouache, I left that to dry and moved on to the stars, which I made using the gelly roll pen.

This was my first time using both black paper and gouache, and I wasn't even sure how the colors were going to turn out together. Luckily, the gouache showed up on the paper very well and I was able to get a solidly colored circle to create the moon out of. If I were to continue with this piece, I would take time to maybe add some more color in the background, like perhaps a nova or something of the sort.
