Wire Sculpture

In this project I created a wire sculpture of a glass cup. The requirement was to pick an object with some negative space and an interesting design to create out of wires. All I needed for this project was a wire cutter, needle nose pliers, and my cup to base my design off of. I eventually added a straw to the cup and made it look as if it was spilling on its side for a more interesting design. In the sculpture, the bonds between each wire had to be solid enough for the sculpture to stand on its own.

To start this project I picked my subject, which was a glass cup from home. Then I began creating the sculpture out of wire. I started from the bottom, making the base first. For the base I bent a wire around the circumference of the base of the glass and then made small attachments to it that were slightly angled upwards. Then I connected the thin middle part of the glass to the base, which was four longer wires. Then I began working on the body of the glass. The. Body was composed of several rings that went around, connected by smaller pieces. This got a little wider the taller it was to represent the expanding circumference of the glass. Then I made a straw out of two very long wires and connected that to the body of the glass. After that I decided to put it on its side and make a puddle looking wire to represent the glass spilling.

The reason I did the glass because I thought it had good negative space, but it didn't have quite the interesting design I needed. That was why I decided to turn the glass on its side and make it look like it was spilling. Another reason why I did this was because it was a little top heavy, so putting it on its side eliminated the problem. The reason why I made a straw was also to make the composition of this project more interesting.
