Maine Icon Sculpture

In this project I had to make a sculpture regarding a Maine icon, or something that Maine is known for. I chose to make a sculpture featuring blueberries in an outline of the state of Maine using sticks, rocks, and pine needles. To put it together I used hot glue, and the blueberries were made out of sculpy. One element of art I used was color. The color of the blueberries made them stick out from the rest of the project. This connects to the principle of design I used, which was contrast. This contrast was used to make the blueberries become the highlight of the sculpture that would catch viewers eyes.

One composition rule I used was informal balance. I staggered where I put the rocks and the blueberries and the general shape of Maine created this informal balance. Over the course of this project I had to revise it a lot. The idea that I had at first was the make the state of Maine into a blueberry basket, but I realized that would be very difficult and probably unrealistic so I decided to make more of a natural scene using rocks, sticks, and pine needles.

The point of this project was to show Maine blueberries, and how they are important to Maine. The state fruit in Maine is the wild blueberry, so that is why I chose to make blueberries in this sculpture. This is important to me because I loved going blueberry picking when I was younger, and they are one of my favorite fruits. If there was anything I could do to make this stronger, I think I would either make it bigger, or add a little more color or maybe some pine needles and sticks.
