Pure Contour

For this assignment I had to make three drawings. First we had to first draw three views of a shoe (2nd image) using just contour lines--clear, solid, bold lines--and then had to zoom and crop one of these shoes three times on one piece of paper (3rd image). The three views of the shoe were top or birds eye view, side view, and front view. For the other drawing I had to draw my hand with pure contour lines holding a rubber band in a certain position (1st image) with varying line weight (darker or lighter lines).

I started this project drawing the side view of the shoe, where I put it on a box so it was at my eye level so I could more easily draw it. To begin drawing, I lightly sketched the outline of the shoe. Next, I lightly sketched the laces and other details of the shoe. After I thought the shape of the shoe looked accurate I made the lines of the shoe darker with a pencil. After that I did the top view of my shoe. For the top view I stood the shoe straight up to get a good angle on it to draw from. I started by drawing the outline lightly and then filled in the details of the shoe. Next I made the lines darker with a pencil. Finally, I made the front view and for that I simply placed it on the table in front of me. I followed the same process as the previous two, making light lines and then making them bolder when I was confident in their shape. After making those drawings, I zoomed in on the laces of the side view of the shoe using a viewfinder--a tool used to focus in on certain areas of a picture--and drew that on another piece of paper. I then focused in on one of the laces of the shoe and drew that. Finally, I "zoomed" in on that lace and drew that. repeated this process twice more to get my finished result. For the drawing of my hand, I first drew the outline of my forearm, and then palm and fingers lightly. Then I added in the rubber band and some of the creases of my hand. After I was confident in my shape, I made all of the lines bolder making sure add varying line weight. To do this I made the lines closer to me darker and the lines father away lighter.

I decided to draw my Sonoma shoes because I thought they provided better detail and balance, rather than my Nike running shoes, which didn't have a ton of detail, besides the mesh. The reason why I picked the certain area of the shoe to zoom in on was because it had the most detail, so I thought that would look more interesting than other parts of the shoe. The laces were the only part of the shoe with a lot of detail congested in one place. I made my hand in that position so that I could still get a good view of the rubber band and so it would create some negative space as well.
