Color wheel

This assignment was composed of two parts but one theme. I had to create and mix colors to create a range of values, from making shades with black to making tints with white. For the first painting I made 2 boxes that were sub-divided in 10 different sections. I just had to pick two colors—one primary color and one secondary color—to use in each box. For the second painting I had to incorporate the full color wheel of secondary and primary colors into one theme or design. I used a campfire scene. I had to make 7 variations of each color—three tints and three shades of each. I used acrylic paint for this project.

What I did to start the first painting of the two boxes was I made each box with 10 sections for each tint and shade of color. Then I chose my primary color I would use. I used blue. Then I took a palette which I put the blue on and then put white and black paint on it too. Then I went on to mix the blue to make 10 colors—4 tints the pure blue and 4 shades of blue. Then I had to apply the paint. I tried to choose a brush that was about the size of each box so I could just use one or two strokes to fill each box. That way the color would be solid and opaque and not show evidence of brush strokes. I tried to make it so the shades and tints contrasted eachother so they looked different. For the second painting I first had to pick a scene. I imagined a campfire scene with a few logs to sit on and trees in the background. I then drew this scene on a large piece of canvas. Next I had to figure out how to make all 84 colors, tints, and shades that were required on the scene. I decided to divide each log and tree opinto sections of seven (to fit the pure color and three tints and shades of each color) and also made the fire have fourteen sections of the flames. There were 10 logs/trees and then the 2 sections of the flames which added up to 84 colors. Then I had to move onto the painting process. For each color I would get the paint of the color or I would get the paints needed to mix to get the color and I would get white and black paint on my palette. Then I would create the 3 shades and 3 tints of each color. Then I would apply the paint to each section of the tree log or flame. Lastly, I decided to paint the sky blue and the ground brown.

The reason I chose blue as my color in the first painting is because blue is my favorite. I also thought that orange looks good and complements blue so that is why I chose that as my second color. For the second painting I decided to make the scene a campfire scene because I go camping with my family a lot over the summer and my favorite times are when I am sitting at the campfire with them. I also knew that I would be able to incorporate all of the required colors in a scene like that.
