Written Reflection:
I really liked 2D design class. I liked it because the class had a great atmosphere and I was able to talk with friends as I did art. Additionally, the projects usually allowed me to pick the subject of the creation and even the media I used. I think that my favorite projects this year were the printmaking project and the post election response. I enjoyed doing both of these projects because I was able to express my values and beliefs in them. I also liked doing the prints project because I enjoyed the process of making the prints. I liked carving out the linoleum and then applying different kinds of ink to get different results. Overall, I thought 2D design was a good class and I enjoyed it.
Over the course of the class, I had a few difficulties I had to overcome. I struggled with a few projects mostly because i didn’t have much experience with the materials I was using. In the circle project (the sunset) I had a lot of trouble making the reflection of the sun on the water because I hadn’t had any experience doing that with acrylic paint. I eventually worked it out but I think it could’ve looked much better. Another thing I had trouble with was the signature self portrait. I had a hard time with this because I found it difficult to make certain parts of my face such as the eyes look realistic and proportionate. I think that even though I struggled with these things, with more experience and practice I can improve my skills.
I think that I learned and improved a lot over this semester of art. I learned a few things such as working with linoleum prints and the process of carving and then printing. I also learned how to effectively incorporate a message into my artwork. I improved upon certain skills such as working with colored pencils and watercolor paint. I think that I improved on working with colored pencils because I think the colors I made looked very bold and solid, especially in the first print I did, where I made the background out of colored pencil. I think I improved with watercolor in the leaf painting I made. It took me a few tries but I finally made it look realistic as I blended the colors together to make it look like a leaf. Over the course of 2D design I struggled with a few things, but it was all a part of the process of learning and improving in a class I enjoyed.
