Wearable Sculpture

In this project I created a wearable sculpture. I made a crown sculpture using cardboard, fabric, jewels, foam, and playing cards. To create it I used a ring of cardboard and used tape to strengthen it, then used hot glue to attach the playing cards. I also used cardboard for the structure above the ring and glued fabric in the spaces in between. One element of art I used was form. I used form by creating a shape with cardboard that resembled a crown. One principle of design I used was pattern, which I created using all of the face cards in a deck of playing cards.

One composition rule and technique I used was formal balance. I did so by creating a balanced and unified crown that looks the same from all four sides. Over the course of this project, this crown evolved a lot. At first I was only planning on making a single ring of cardboard covered with the cards. To make it more interesting I decided to add more height and depth to the piece by adding the crossed bands of cardboard and fabric. Finally, I added a little yellow foam crown at the top to complete the crown.

I created this piece because the deck of cards I was playing with reminded me of a crown, because of the king and queen face cards. I decided that I would play off of that and make a crown using only face cards, but of course this project evolved into much more. I think if this could be stronger I would iron out the fabric to get rid of the creases to make it look more neat. One challenging part of this project was getting the proportions right so that it would fit my head, and not be too big or too small. The part I'm proud of is that I was able to follow through with my idea and make it look like a crown while incorporating face cards. This shows my strengths and weaknesses as a learner because I was able to be innovative and learn to create a hat sculpture--something I've had relatively no experience with before.
