Community

For this project I had to pick an area of my town that was important to me, and paint it on a block of wood. The idea was that my classmates and I would hang up each block of wood together, showing our community by these painting representing our favorite parts of town. I chose to do the hunter road fields (soccer fields). The task was not to make these paintings realistic, but to take the features of the land from a birds eye view and make them interesting with colors and patterns. Everyone used paint from the same color pallet to create a sense of unity amongst the different projects.

To begin this project I had to pick a place in my town. After I picked my place, the hunter road fields, I looked it up on google earth and printed a picture of it. Then I sketched this picture on a piece of paper. After that I got my thin, square block of wood and painted a layer of spectral yellow. When I let that dry I figured out which colors I would out where by labeling each section of my sketch with names of colors. Then I sketched my drawing on paper on the wood. After that I began painting on the wood. I made sure to apply multiple layers on paint to each section in order to have solid, clear section of paint. Also I made sure to contrast darks and lights, such as the blues and greens and yellows and reds. At first I didn't like the red color I was using so I switched to a darker red and painted over the old red color. When I had finally finished painting and all colors seemed to be solid and opaque, I decided where I would add pattern. I chose to use paint pens to draw on some patterns as well as the lines for the soccer fields.

For this project I chose to use the hunter road fields because they are an important place to me. I have payed many soccer games there, so it brings back a lot of good memories to use this as a subject for my painting. I felt it represented our community because I think sports are a big part of our community and bring a lot of kids in our community closer together. Soccer is also one of my favorite sports, so I wanted a way to tie that into my painting. The reason I picked the colors I picked was because I wanted to stick to the required color pallet while providing a sense of contrast between dark and light colors.
