The subject of my art work is a dead monkey, and part of his brain is showing. The words monkey and brain are interwoven into the drawing. We picked random words (that were nouns) from a hat and had to create a piece of art involving that thing. I made this artwork by using graphite pencils at first to create the design and then I used colored pencils to create it. I chose to create this art this way because it is identifiable as a monkey and a brain, has the words (which were required to be in the piece), and also because I felt like this was the best way to incorporate monkey and brains together. One element I used was shape. I really used shape to portray the monkey's face and brain without it being too realistic. A principle I used was unity. The whole picture fit together and was in the center of the paper.
One composition rule I used was formal balance. This piece was balanced on both sides, and was centered on the paper. I also used sharp focus by making everything detailed and easy to see on the picture. In this project I went through many ideas of how to create a picture from the phrase monkey brains, which is a pretty unique one. First I was going to focus on the words, but then I decided to focus on drawing the monkey and its brain, and then I would incorporate the words into the drawing. I think that for having such a unique task, it evolved a lot and turned out well.
I did this drawing because in class, each student had to think of a noun and then each of us picked one of these nouns out of a hat and had to draw them. This project was inspired by graphic design, and we had to incorporate graphic design by coming up with a way to include the noun into a drawing of it. I decided to make it this way because it made the most sense to me to make the monkey and brain together and not a monkey and a brain separately. If I could improve this piece I would've burnished more and I might've added a nose. The most challenging thing was definitely coming up with a design that made sense from the phrase monkey brains. I'm proud of how I was able to create a picture that looked good and made sense of that phrase. This illustrates my strengths and weaknesses as a learner because although I could've burnished my colored pencil more, I was able to come up with a good idea from a hard task.
