Scratch board

In this project I made a picture of a beach with scratch board. A scratch board is a board that you scratch with sharp tools to pull away the black covering to reveal the white underneath. In this project we had to pick a picture we had taken that had a range of values. Then we printed the picture and made it on the scratch board, trying to make the values looking as they did on the printed picture. In this project I used three types of tools. One tool had just one sharp point with which I could make fine details. Another tool had a sharp point put it had edges so I could scratch more area on the scratchboard. The third tool had eight points, and this helped me to create different values in between black and white and also helped me to cover more surface area on the scratchboard.

To start this project I picked a picture that I had taken. The picture I chose was of dowses beach. I chose this because it had a good range of values. Then I printed this picture of and got a piece of scratch board. Then I made grids on the scratchboard and on the printed image. The boxes in the grids were one inch by one inch. To start the project I worked my way from the top left box and across, taking it one box at a time. I made sure to replicate the values on the picture as best as I could on the scratchboard, using different tools to make specific details as well. I mostly use the eight pointed tool because if thought it best replicated the patterns and the value of the ocean and the sand. I mostly used the tool that covered more surface area for the clouds because the clouds were mainly white, and the more I scratched, the whiter the value on the scratchboard. I knew I was finished with this project when I looked at the completed scratchboard and saw that it looked alike the printed picture, in terms of the details of the beach and also the values of the different areas of the picture.

The reason why I decided to make this scratchboard project into a picture of a beach was because it was a picture of dowses beach in Cape Cod. This beach is very important to me because it reminds me of the summer and I go there every summer. Also I picked this picture had a great range of values. The clouds were very light while the rocks and seaweed were darker and the ocean was in between. This made the scratchboard more interesting because it had a range of values instead of just a few different values.
