Flag Project

The subject of this artwork is a reimagined American flag. We had to come up with our own idea for the flag, using stars and stripes and the colors red, white, and blue. I made a flag with red stripes and blue stars in the shape of USA. I made this using graphite pencils lightly at first and then I used colored pencils. I created this because I thought it would be interesting to incorporate the geography of USA. One element I used was lines. I used straight uniform lines to make the flag look neat and realistic. One principle I used was contrast. I contrasted the stars from the stripes by making the stars blue and the stripes red.

One composition rule I used was informal balance. I used informal balance by making it so the stripes had breaks in them and weren't exactly alike, and also the way USA is shaped is not completely balanced. Another rule I used was grouping. I used grouping by putting the stars together, and the striped together and not incorporating them together. This evolved because at first I had the stars only have a blue outline, but after some peer feedback I decided to fill them in with blue to put more emphasis on them.

The meaning is that USA is a big country that was many different people, but we're all together no matter where we live. This relates to my life because I like geography and I wanted to tie geography into this map. If I could revise this I would probably make an outline of the USA around the stars to define it more. The most challenging part of this was making the stars look good, and to put them in place to create the shape of USA. I'm most proud of how I was able to come up with an idea that incorporated stars, stripes, and the shape of USA. This shows my strengths and weaknesses as a learner because I was able to come up with a new idea and make a drawing that looked like it could be a flag.
