Bust Concentration

My experience in 3D design was very good. Throughout the semester I enjoyed creating sculptures, I even discovered that I like to create 3-dimensional art rather than 2-dimensional art most of the time. Additionally, I learned many different techniques using many different materials. Some of these materials were clay, paper, sculpey, wire, and even hockey tape. I was tested with my time management skills too, and I managed to keep up almost all of the time. I would say one process I really enjoyed was creating the ceramic bust of the soccer player Emre Can. I enjoyed this so much because I really cared about making him look the best possible. I felt passionate about this project and I like the end product very much. Another process I enjoyed was making my twin brother’s portrait out of hockey tape. I liked doing this because making something out of hockey tape was something I had no experience with, and I found that I liked the texture and pattern it created. One process that I struggled with was my concentration project. It was hard to make the little figures out of sculpey because it is very malleable, so it was difficult to make details. I think I learned from this and would use a different material next time.

The project I am the most proud of is the ceramic bust. I am proud of this because it looks similar to Emre Can. I like how his hair looks very realistic, and I also like how the creative spin (the soccer ball pattern on his face) turned out. Another project I am proud of is the political hands because I love how I got this meaningful message across in a way that looks good as well. I think it is an important message in today’s world, and it was good to be able to represent it artistically. I think that I learned and improved in a few ways throughout the course of 3D design. One area I improved in was creating objects with sculpey. Near the middle of the semester I was only comfortable with creating buildings out of sculpey, and by the end of the semester I was able to make actual people, soccer players and hockey players, out of sculpey, and I was able to make them look realistic. One thing I learned in 3D design was the process of creating a bust. I learned unique the process of making the head and shoulders, and then creating detailed facial features. This process was completely new to me as I had never created a ceramic bust before.

By doing 3D design I realized how art relates to my life in many ways. I learned how art is always around me, and can be created from pretty much anything. I created art with very different materials like pine needles and sticks, and also hockey tape. The projects I did this year all related to me in some shape or form–the bust because I play soccer, the relief portrait because I play hockey, the mainah sculpture because I am a mainah. I think 3D design also allowed me to find my own styles and materials that I liked. I found myself creating art that had to do with sports I play, and also found myself using clay or sculpey to make these sculptures. Overall, I had a good time in 3D design, and I hope to work more with 3D art in the future.
