Color Study

For this project the goal was color averaging and color mixing. What I did first was pick a person to do a portrait of a person. I picked Boston Bruin's hockey player Patrice Bergeron. To do color averaging and mixing I divided the paper up into centimeter by centimeter blocks and focused on each and every block, averaging the color in each block. The goal was not to make a very realistic drawing but to demonstrate color averaging and mixing. The materials I used were oil pastels and I was allowed to break up the little squares in half horizontally, vertically, or diagonally if I needed to..

The first thing I did was divide up the printed picture I had of Patrice Bergeron into centimeter by centimeter squares. Next I broke up my drawing paper into centimeter by centimeter squares. Next, I got right into the color averaging and mixing with the oil pastels. In the background I used mostly white and grey and mixed them together with a tool called a tortillon to get the color average. I repeated this process with the rest of the face and shoulders with different colors. I payed attention to the detail of the image and tried to create the color average of the corresponding square on the image.

The reason I picked Bergeron for this project was because I play hockey and he is one of my favorite hockey players. I also thought it provided a good range of values and colors to work with. I felt it had some good lighting and also shadow too that I could show when color mixing and color averaging.
