Inside Out Sculpture

In this project I created what is called an inside out sculpture. This means that I created a sculpture with something totally unrelated on the inside. I chose to paint the outside of a mug like a starry sky and then make a city inside with an ocean with water spilling out. To make this I used a variety of materials such as paint, sculpy, hot glue, and foam core. I made the buildings out of sculpy and glued them to the inside of the mug to create the city, and painted both the inside and outside of the mug. One element of art I used was texture. The hot glue and the sculpy created texture in this sculpture. One principle of design I used was contrast. The colorful inside of the mug contrasted the dark outside of the mug.

One composition rule and technique I used was leading lines. I think the hot glue and the foam core ocean served as these leading lines and they draw the viewer's attention to the inside of the sculpture. Over the course of this project my sculpture evolved a great deal. At first I was planning on only making a city on the inside, but then I realized I should make it more 3D so I created the ocean spilling out of the mug. Also, I didn't know what to do with the outside of the mug, and it was suggested I do a sort of night sky on the outside, so I did that.

I think the meaning of this artwork is that we are trapped in a sense, and once we let our thoughts out our society will move forward. This relates to my life because I love cities, and and I like visiting them. If I could revise this I think I might repaint the outside to make the stars better. Also I might put a bridge over the water. One thing I 'm proud about is the overall look of the project. One thing that was hard to do was getting the buildings to look realistic. This shows my strengths and weaknesses as a learner because I was able to learn to use sculpy and incorporate into a project that takes the viewer by surprise.
