Signature Self Portrait

In this assignment I made a self portrait using only my signature (excluding the background). For the self portrait I used graphite pencil and used a range of values from dark to light and for the background I used red and green colored pencil. I made my signature all different sizes and values. One element I used in this artwork was value. I used value to show the features on my face and on my shirt. This was important because I could draw no lines, I could only use my signature. Another principle I used was color. I used red and green in the background, which are complementary colors.

One composition rule and technique I used was the rule of thirds. My face took up the left two thirds of the page, making a more interesting composition. Another composition rule and technique I used was soft focus. Using the signature to draw the face made it so there were no defined or sharp lines in the composition. My project evolved because at first it was very light and didn't have a range of values so I added more dark signatures. Also the first time I made my eyes they were disproportionate so I had to redo them and I also ended up adding the background as well.

I made the background green and red because I made this around christmas time and also because I really like christmas. I think if I could make this stronger I would make the facial features look more realistic, especially the eyes. The part of this that was the most challenging was making the facial features look realistic using just signatures. The part I'm most proud of was how I was able to use a range of values to make the self portrait look like my actual face. This shows my strengths and weaknesses as a learner because I was able to learn how to use my signature to make a realistic face.
