CLASS DESCRIPTION
This class is a year long academic equivalent of the college preparatory level 1 Spanish offered at Marshwood High School. It is designed for students who have very little knowledge of basic Spanish. Students commit for the entire year and, upon earning a final grade of C or higher, will have the opportunity to advance to a level 2 as a 9th grade student.
We will learn vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and spoken speech and work in all four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing and students will also explore Spanish-speaking cultures. The goal will be to acquire the Spanish language!
This course will focus on using Comprehensible Input, and we will use methods and strategies that are based on Dr. Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis as well as storytelling strategies. We will focus on high frequency structures (words used most frequently in Spanish) and we will use these structures in class discussions, stories, and cultural explorations. You will be expected to recognize them when you read or hear them and also be able to produce them in speech and writing. This year long course will prepare students to take on the next level of Spanish at MHS and continue learning and acquiring the Spanish Language.
Grading
25% Interpretive Language (INTP)
Assesses the learners’ ability to pull meaning out of the target language through reading or listening.
25% Presentational Language (PRES)
Assesses the learners’ ability to communicate formulated ideas in the target language, through planned
writing or rehearsed speech
25% Interpersonal Language (INPS)
Assesses the learners’ ability to spontaneously communicate ideas in the target language, through
responsive writing and conversational scenarios.
25% Cultural Knowledge (CULT)
Assesses the learners’ knowledge of the target language culture, through engagement with authentic
native practices, products, and perspectives.
