WHY IS HEALTH EDUCATION IMPORTANT?
Health Education gives students the knowledge and skills to thrive physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. It contributes to students' ability to successfully practice behaviors that protect and promote health and avoid and reduce risks.
Health Education helps students to determine personal values and group norms that support healthy behaviors. Students learn basic health concepts and influences on their health, and develop the skills required to adopt, practice, and maintain health enhancing and safe behaviors.
Health Education allows students to become Health Literate people who:
- can think things through and make healthy choices in solving their own problems.
- are responsible and make choices that benefit themselves and others
- are in charge of their own learning.
- can use communication skills in clear and respectful ways.
Grade 6 Health (Required for all students)
“Intro to Health” covering basic concepts about :
- Physical, Social and Emotional Dimensions of Health and why the balance of all 3 dimensions is key to wellness.
- Taking Care of ME: goal setting, healthy / unhealthy coping strategies, distress, eustress and triggers of stress, peer pressure, bullying and character development.
- The Integumentary System and Hygiene, Sweat/Perspiration, Skin Care and Acne, Sun Protection
- Making Safe and Healthy Decisions. Introduction of the Decision Making Model and the use of “Daily Dilemma” cliff hanger situations.
