While life at CAPA is anything but dependable, the sounds of voices practicing various pieces of choir repertoire can be found amongst the various blares of student life. Recently, you may have heard songs like āJuntosā, āUnited in Purposeā, or āTotal Praiseā, which are three of the thirteen songs that were displayed in the Spring Vocal Concert on April 30th and May 1st.Ā
Mrs. Thomas-Moyett (the head of the Vocal Department) picks a new theme every year, breathing life and creativity into traditional and modern songs, adjusting the pieces to recent events and emotions. This year, the theme was Storms, Solidarity, and Social Justice, which was established effectively in the first song, āMedley America/Lift Evāry Voiceā, which featured Skye Groves (our very own Sophomore writer) as a poet reading his poem, āTruth of Americaā. Skye spoke passionately about the country, recognizing a complicated past as perpetrators of violence, discrimination, and pain. The sound of his words filled the Grand Hall, grabbing each sharp corner and pulling it in. This set the mood for the next twelve songs, a display of power and strength in the face of hardship.Ā
The concert had a run time of two hours, lining up seamlessly with a pink, orange, and yellow sunset above the horizon. The concert kept the audience engaged, able, and encouraged to nod or dance to the beats, accompanied by instrumentalists Ethan Pierce, Eren Whittaker, Remer Georges, and Kyāaire Davis, along with violinist Ellis Holloman, Towards the end of the recital, the Senior Vocalists performed a beautiful mix of āRemember Meā from the movie Coco and āI Know Iāve Been Changedā by LaShun Peace. Singing through sniffles and tears, their emotions spreading across the room, packing a kick of nostalgia. The sadness couldnāt last long, as the seniors and audience were swept back into āThe Storm is Passing Overā, a rhythmic spiritual containing the message that all āstormsā will pass.Ā
This concert cannot simply be summarized; the wholeness of each songās overwhelming roller coasters of sound requires having been there. If you missed it, feel free to visit the CAPA Arts YouTube channel to get a preview of the talent youāll be able to see next year. Mrs. Thomas-Moyett is already brewing another wonderful concert next year, enveloping creativity, life, and hope to be lightning-struck onto her next audience. December 2025 or Spring 2026, you'd better be seen in one of those seats!Ā
