As the weather grows colder, and the year ends, ideas and chatter blow through the bustling hallways. All covering one thing; what this next year has to offer. Better grades, more sleep, and of course, a much-needed bathroom reinvention.
However, what hasn’t been talked about enough is CAPA’s upcoming, first-ever Blizzard Ball for the freshman and sophomores. It’s scheduled for January 10th in the Grand Hall. For something exciting and new, it hasn’t gotten as much talk as it deserves, and that’s throwing a wrench in the plans for a wintery dance.
Snagging a chance to talk to the students who came up with the idea in the nurse’s office, I questioned them about where the thought first came from. Picture this, two kids; Destiny Lomax and Naomi Riddick, sitting in Mr. Melon’s class, chatting about old times during class. While they were talking about the Spring Fling and the fact that a bunch of other schools have Homecoming and we don't, they were determined to change that. As Naomi nonchalantly recounted the conversation, she simplified their enlightenment of the idea with a simple, “Yo, we should have a winter dance.” After going to Mr. Fulton, and not needing to convince him much at all, the dance was underway. At least…in theory… As Nurse V. picked up the conversation, my eyes were opened to the selfless dedication and blindingly clear passion for making the Blizzard Ball a dance not to be forgotten. However, this would prove hard considering all the problems in their path. Embracing the winter theme, while the attire itself can be any level of fancy, the colors should reflect the wonders of winter. The Grand Hall should be a swirl of blue, white, red, and gold attire. The food was going to be Panera but after a small student survey, that idea was firmly rebuffed. A swap to Destiny’s mom’s cooking proved enough to pass the proclaimed taste test, and now the upcoming party guests can look forward to munching on delicious, home-cooked soul food instead. Now, despite all this exciting talk, words are nothing without action
When I asked about how the progress was going, I was surprised to hear that things weren’t going so well and the struggles of the upcoming dance are oddly simple: a lack of money. “There is no budget,” Nurse V. had said, “We’re relying on the ticket sales…to get the..the stuff.” With Destiny, Naomi, and Nurse V. charting, concocting, and crafting this dance with only the money from their pockets for now, their big plans for DJs, photo booths, hot chocolate stations, and cozy little igloo corners are looking more and more distant as the month goes on. The original plan was for some of the money to come from them, and some of it to come from the actual ticket sales. However, despite the offer of buying earlier for cheaper over the morning loudspeakers, with nobody taking action, we are plotting the downfall of a soon-to-come frosty fiesta. Don’t fret though, all snowy wonderland hope is not lost! With Destiny and Naomi being their awesome, determined selves and our driven school nurse Ms. V working hard as ever, they are intent on throwing the ball straight out of anyone’s favorite feel-good Christmas movie. Better yet, you can help! By purchasing your tickets ahead of time, you can help the first and best Blizzard Ball be a flurry of snowy success. Talk to Ms. V to get your tickets as soon as you can! And, as always, stay warm!
