Muslim Student Alliance
Philadelphia has a population of 1.5 million, and 20% of that population is Muslim. That is almost 300,000 people! But with such a large amount of people, Muslims still experience discrimination and people aren’t educated on the basics of Islam even though it is the second most practiced religion in the world. CAPA is known for being accommodating and accepting of students of all types, which can be seen in how diverse the school is and the clubs that are offered.
We have plenty of clubs where anyone can fit in and find their place, like the Black Student Alliance, Latinx Club, Gay Student Alliance, and many more. These clubs are staples at CAPA because of the community it brings and everyone can be themselves. These students took it upon themselves to open a new club for Muslim students.
Muslim Student Alliance is coming to CAPA in January 2025 and it strives to be a safe space for all Muslim students, especially during the month of Ramadan, which begins February 28th, 2025. This club is run by three students, Skye Groves, Valeria Santiago-Estrella, and Malyiah Mcneil. Ms.Byrd, CAPA’s assistant principal is the club’s sponsor and they are all working together to create this club for students. Their goal is to make a private area for Muslim students to pray during Ramadan with no rush at all, Be open and educational to the religion of Islam and situations happening in Islamic countries, and provide a space where Muslim students can talk about their faith and be themselves. Look for flyers around the school to get more information as they prepare for Ramadan.
