The light through the window shines on your eyelids, forcing you to wake up and smell the faint aroma of pie. Someone in your neighborhood is baking a pie early in the morning, to eat with their family. or friends. Regardless, you don’t mind the smell as it doesn’t have any significance to you. Whether your family bakes pies, or different desserts for Thanksgiving, you wonder why pies are so popular around this month? Why do so many people choose to bake pies when there are so much better treats?
This is the history of pie and why it’s so popular during the fall month. The story begins in Ancient Egypt and Greece began to make pie-like dishes. At first, pies were primarily savory. Their main reason for making pies was to preserve foods such as meat and vegetables in a crust made like bread. Over time, the people of Ancient Egypt and Greece decided to add fruits and other sweet fillings into the pies. This would be a success as the tale of pie began to make its way through trading routes and cultural exchanges. This popular influence would be noticed by the Romans, who expanded their empires by conquering parts of Egypt and Greece.
As the Romans discovered the development of pies, being the conquerors they were, they shifted the concept of pies to their liking. Soon, once again like how Ancient Greece and Egypt traded their own pies to neighboring regions and beyond. Romans did the same thing as before. When the pies traveled through different parts of the world. New adaptations and new ingredients for the sweetened treat would be added and changed in different cultures. The constant trading and exchanging in the Medieval period, would lead to Europeans bringing back the pies back to Europe. Which would lead to the pies traveling back to the States by the fellow European colonists.
Overtime, the Early colonists took the idea of pies and began to blend them with different fruits. They used the fruits in these pies as a way to employ any remaining fruits that were in season during the fall. Leading to why pie is such a superior choice to eat during the autumn months. The pies had different flavors for everyone to eat and the price was affordable. Some people even saw pies as a symbol of the harvest season and the bounty of lands. The popularity of pies is the abundance and availability of seasonal ingredients in the Harvest season. So, if you really love pies, then say thanks to Ancient Egypt, Greece, Romans, and maybe the Europeans. But honestly, We don’t mess with them, so bye!
