Heart to Heart by Nyx Owens
CAPA’s very own Community Service Club has topped their own standard with every event they’ve had. Starting with their “Pink Out”, which featured face painting, a runway, and silly string, they followed up with their “Polar Express”, which included a hot cocoa bar, candy cane grams, a raffle, and more! For their first event of the year, they’ve organized a “Heart to Heart” bakesale, and a spirit week! Every event that they throw, they raise money for a different cause, and this time around, they celebrated Heart Disease Awareness Month.
They hosted a spirit week, as previously mentioned, with every day having a unique theme! Monday, the 10th, was a color coordinated theme, where you dressed a certain color based on your relationship status. Tuesday, the 11th, was Dress as Your Type Day, which is relatively self-explanatory. Wednesday, the 12th, was White Lies day, where we exposed our red flags via a white t-shirt. Finally, Thursday, the 13th, was the day of the bake sale, where those wearing red got discounts and a chance to win a goody basket. The event was a hit, and all the money raised was donated to research for heart disease.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. - thanks McDonald’s - and almost one million people passed away due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). The month is used to raise awareness of this disease and to promote healthy habits, such as regular exercise and less McDonald’s - all tea, all shade. CVD has no cure, but there are treatments to help you get better. Lifestyle changes are the biggest one.
Overall, the bake sale and spirit week raised student morale, and everyone enjoyed themselves! The themes were unique, fun, and easy, and the bake sale itself had plenty of fun activities. There was a Shirley Temple bar, a photo booth, plenty of treats, and gifts for special people. They offered singing telegrams, flowers, hats, candy, and much more. You truly had to be there.
