Google Keep is a website or app that is free and links with your Google account, which means everybody has access to it already!
The easiest way to describe Google Keep is by saying it's, basically, a digital sticky note, but there is SO much more to it. Keep can be used to create notes, lists, reminders, you can draw on it, you can make voice recordings, you can create shared notes/reminders/lists, you can grab text from an image, and so much more.
This is a great tool to use for both school and home - especially if you're a list person and enjoy checking things off your list!
Below, I will be sharing a more detailed description of the most popular features, as well as tutorials on how to use them. However, if you would prefer to watch a video description, I have attached one here:
Sharing notes with others - especially when it comes to grocery lists or coaching tasks
Multiple colors with the option of color coordinating
Having access to the same notes on my computer, phone, and watch
Being able to check items off my list and watching that list shrink
Being able to add images at the top to have it look more fun š¤©
Staying organized!
Grabbing text from images so it saves me the step of typing it - anything to save time
To find Google Keep, you will go to your Google Apps and find the Keep icon (you may have to scroll down a little ways).
Once you find Keep, it will open a new window. If it's your first time using it, a small window will open that offers dark mode. The website version will then look like this:
This is where all of the options begin. First, you can easily start a new note, list, drawing, or add an image (see picture).
Once you've created the note/list/drawing/picture you will have another set of options to choose from.
To organize your Keep, you may want to use the Label option. You can create any label that you want - I think of them as different groups. The labels will show up on the left side of the page. When you select one of those labels, only the notes that have that label will appear.
In order to add a label to a note (if you don't do it right away) you will click the three dots at the bottom of the note, select "Add label", then you will be given the option of selecting a label that was already created, or you can make a new one. Notes can be added to multiple labels too!
This feature is GREAT for many reasons, both school-related and non-school-related.
School example: At a training or conference the speakers will sometimes say to take a picture of the screen so you can refer to it later. This would save you the step of typing the information onto a Slide of Doc.
Non-School example: After taking pictures or screenshots of recipes this makes the creation of a grocery list a breeze, it also helps to convert a picture of a recipe into a paper copy.
Select the picture icon at the bottom of the screen. This will give you two options, you can either take a photo right away or upload a photo from your phone.
Add the picture you choose
Select on the picture once it is uploaded
Click on the three dots in the top right corner
Select "Grab image text."
*You will want to proofread this since sometimes it pulls extra letters.
Select the picture icon for the "new note with image" option
2. Find the picture on your computer and select it.
3. Wait for the picture to upload.
4. Select the three dots at the bottom of the screen.
5. Choose to "Grab image text."
6. Scroll down and the text will be typed out. To turn this into a grocery list - select the three dots and choose, "Show checkboxes."
The information in Keep can easily be transferred to a Doc - this comes in handy after you grab the text from images on Keep.
Be sure the side panel is shown - this option is in the bottom right corner
2. Click on the Keep icon.
3. Find the note you want to use
4. Drag and drop that note onto the Doc
5. The information is on your Doc, without have to type a word of it (I deleted the picture on the Doc).
The reminder option gives you a lot of choices. You can choose to have Keep remind you at a certain time, day, or location.
You can use the Google Chrome Web Store to download Keep as an extension. Once you have the extension downloaded you can use it on any website. This makes taking notes a breeze (this would be a helpful tool for students to use).
Using the extension saves the link to the page you are using and saves any notes you take while on that page.
