QR Codes in the Classroom

QR codes are nothing new, but I think we oftentimes forget how handy and simple they are. They can be used for such a wide variety of things: links to websites, online menus when restaurants stopped using paper copies, easy ways to access slides or educational information, or even simple sign-out options. I currently use QR codes in my room as my sign-out system for leaving my room, as well as my book checkout system.

Below I will walk you through the steps of linking something to a QR code and then creating and using that QR code and the information.

Linking a QR Code:

This is extremely easy and can be done with anything that has a URL. For this example, I am going to use a Google From.

Create a Google Form - you can customize this to look and ask anything you choose.

I attached an example of the Form I use for my books.

2. When your form is set up how you want, you will select "Send", click on the link option in the window that pops up, and then choose "copy"

This will add the URL of the form to your clipboard, and it is ready for you to paste.

3. Now you want to create your QR code. In order to do this, you can search any online QR code generator, but this is the link to the one I use.

4. I am using a URL, so I selected that option and then pasted the link where it said to. That is all I have to do, but if you want, you can change the look of the QR code by selecting different options - this is where I circled in the picture. When you're satisfied, you will want to download the QR code.

5. Once you download you QR code, it will be saved to your computer. All you need to do now is print the QR code and have students scan it and complete the form.

Students can scan these with their phones, or their Chromebooks!

Retrieving the Information

One important thing to know, is how to retrieve the information that you are getting from the QR code. In order to do this, you will:

Open the Form that you linked to the QR code
Select the "Responses" option
Click on the Google Sheets icon

4. Once you select this, a Sheet will open and it will have all of the information that was on your Form, as well as the email address of the individual who completed the form.

This Sheet will continue to update without you having to do anything!
