Senior Parents,
Please have your senior check with the Southwest Health Office in Room W119 (NOT the School Based Health Clinic) to make sure they have BOTH doses of the meningococcal vaccine on file. This protects against brain infection (meningitis). Minnesota state law requires 2 doses for seniors. If your senior cannot receive the vaccine due to a medical or non-medical exemption, please sign/notarize the exemption form and bring it to the Southwest Health Office in Room W117.
(see page 2 – English | Somali | Spanish | Hmong ). Thanks!
On Tuesday, October 8th from 3:15-4:15pm the Anchor Crew will be hosting a 9th grade Study Session after school in the commons called, “CHIPS & CRAM”. If your 9th grade student would like some academic help to boost their grades, please encourage them to attend. Anchor Crew is a group of Laker junior and seniors committed to helping freshmen be successful in all aspects of high school and building positive social networks across grade levels. Any and all 9th graders are welcome!
Prospective 9th Grade Boys’ Basketball Players/Families
Message from Coach Keenan Shelton: Head Boys’ Basketball Coach
I hope all is well as you read this note and that the transition to high school has brought excitement, challenge, and reward this far. I look forward to connecting with many of you as we get closer to the start of winter sports and the 2024-2025 basketball season. As the season approaches, there are a few things that I want to share, including important dates, opportunities, and communication channels.
Tryout Dates: Tryouts for all levels will be Monday, November 18, 2024, and Tuesday, November 19, 2024. These are the first two days of our official season, and we will use this time for player evaluations. Unlike the travel basketball environment that many of you are accustomed to, we cannot have any direct contact as coaches until this time. Tryout will begin at either 5pm or 5:30pm on these dates. Confirmation and more details will be shared later.
9th Grade Player/Parent Meeting: A virtual meeting for all prospective 9th grade players/parents will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 6pm. We will use this time to discuss details of the tryout process, provide a season preview, and build early relationships. The meeting will be hosted on zoom, so please “SAVE THE DATE & TIME”. The link to join the meeting is: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/76670933919?pwd=u2imMsL7ElO1kHU0vyaGMNozCutboj.1
Open Gym: We are working to secure open gym dates for the fall. Please follow us on socials for updates: Twitter @lakers_sw and Instagram @southwestboysbasketball.
Fall League Opportunities: We will be competing in a local fall league for all levels, including 9th grade level. Fall league competition is every Sunday (2 games a day) at a local high school to be determined. The league will begin mid-late October and will conclude prior to our first official tryout date. Depending on interest, we will likely have two 9th grade teams (purple/white) and we will balance the weekly participation. Interested players/families should sign-up via this registration form by Friday, October 11, 2024. Once registration closes, I will be in communication with all families via email with more details. Please note that I will communicate the schedule as soon as it is provided to me by the event organizers.
For other information and communication related to the Boys’ Basketball Program, be sure to follow us on Twitter: @lakers_sw and Instagram: @southwestboysbasketball.
Thanks,
Coach Shelton

These are new positions were created to expand the voices of new Southwest families to the Foundation, and to serve as a link between the Foundation and current families.
Current Board tasks include the 9th Grade Parent Party, annual grant review and approvals, #GiveToTheMax and End-of-Year online fundraising campaigns, Spring Southwest Legacy Fundraising Gala, Athletic Hall of Fame and Golf Event, Alumni events and tours, and seasonal newsletters.
