Vaping in school is an unfortunate reality plaguing high schools across the country. Damage to student health coupled with property damage caused by irresponsible vape disposal are only two of the negative impacts of this behavior. While we’d like to believe Southwest is an exception to this reality, that is simply not a match for the facts. To deter this behavior, we will be immediately implementing the following expectations, which have been communicated to students and are now communicated to families via the newsletter. We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these expectations.
Vaping at Southwest will not be tolerated. Students found vaping anywhere on school property will be subject to the following minimum consequences: confiscation of vape, student search, conference with administration, guardian contact, detention after school, chemical health referral, ineligibility to participate in school sports and activities as dictated by MSHSL Bylaws, and restitution for property damage, if applicable. Students failing to meet expectations multiple times will be subject to escalating consequences including out-of-school suspension, administrative transfer to another building, and recommendation for expulsion.
In all building restrooms, only one person is allowed per stall. If multiple students are found in a stall, all students in that stall regardless of whether they are in possession of a vape are subject to the same minimum consequences for students found vaping. It is the responsibility of students not to put themselves in positions where they could be subject to these behavior consequences.
Consequences are assigned at the discretion of building administration.
