GUIDANCE UPDATE

Kindergarteners started the year with classes focused on how to identify feelings by looking for clues in a person’s face and body, as well as the situation. Next, we explored a number of ways to handle big feelings--especially anger--by first calming down and then deciding how to solve the problem. We've also been working on 'Yes play' versus 'No play,' which is the idea that playing with one another is more fun (and creative) if I go along with your ideas and you go along with my ideas (*as long as those ideas are safe and not hurtful), instead of one person being in charge. Lastly, I've been inviting Kindergarteners to the guidance office for lunch bunches (4-5 students at a time) so they are familiar with that space if they ever want to check in for social or emotional support. We've played some silly listening games and had lively discussions on how to handle missing a parent while at school. That being said, rest assured that I will always be in touch with parents/guardians before working individually with your child on any specific social-emotional concerns.

First and second graders reviewed feelings identification in oneself and others and then shifted to the following topics: how to handle getting separated from the group or from your grownups; feelings can change; different people have different feelings and preferences; building confidence; and showing compassion. I used the Second Step curriculum and read-alouds to explore each of these concepts through fictional scenarios. We learn about and practice skills via partner shares and role-playing.

Third and fourth graders also reviewed feelings identification and then shifted to these topics: different people and different perspectives; showing compassion; the dos and don'ts of joining into and participating in conversations; how to join into games; and how to handle bragging. We've also reviewed the definition of bullying (intended to ridicule, humiliate, or intimidate; repeated over time; and intentional) and will explore the role that bystanders can play in interrupting bullying (interrupt it, report it, be an ally).

Please contact dennis.delay@mmuusd.org or at (802)434-5774 with any questions about guidance classes or the overall social-emotional health of your child.

All School Morning Meeting Friday, December 6th

Car Seat Safety Review and VT Car Seat Law

Families Encouraged to Attend

Please join us at All School Morning Meeting on Friday, December 6th to hear from the 1st and 2nd graders and a special guest about how we can stay safe in our vehicles during this busy holiday travel season and every day.

Our first and second graders have been learning about traffic safety as part of our health education program. As a finale to this topic the All School Morning Meeting on Friday, December 6th will review the traffic safety lessons learned and hear important updates about our car seat law in the state of Vermont. After the conclusion of the morning meeting families with concerns about their car seats will have the opportunity to have their car seat checked by a car seat technician.

Please let Nurse Lindsay know if you would like your car seat checked after the conclusion of the morning meeting.

FROM THE KITCHEN

Kitchen Volunteers Needed

Are you interested in an opportunity to be involved in your child(ren)’s life during the school day? Would you like to get to know every child at BPMS by name? Curious to know if your kids are actually eating their vegetables at school? If so, volunteering in the kitchen as a lunch server might be a great place to start! The BPMS kitchen team is proud to make fresh, wholesome, and delicious food, however, we are dependent on volunteers to help serve lunch. Please consider signing up for a day or two to join the kitchen team and be a part of the school lunch hustle. The time commitment is from 10:50-12:30 and no experience is required! And, you get to see your kiddos and squeeze in a few extra hugs! Please check out the SignUpGenius HERE to sign up for a shift or contact Hilary at hilary.redman@mmuusd.org for more information.
