Behavioral Frequency Count (Tally Marks)

  • Teacher keeps a cumulative tally of the number of times that the behavior is observed during a given period.

  • Examples include: student call-outs, requests for teacher help during independent seatwork, raising one’s hand to make a contribution to large-group discussion, teacher redirections

Option 1

  • Always take the frequency count during the same amount of time (e.g., one full class period, transition between classes, lunch).

Option 2

  • If taking the frequency count during variable amounts of time, record the number of minutes (approximately) so we can get a behavior rate per minute (so we aren't comparing number of times the behavior was observed in a 5 minute period to a 50 minute period).

  • You can use the printable worksheet below (left) once per week, or document the frequency count on the google sheet (right) once per week. If multiple teachers are tracking this for the same student, you can share the google sheet.
